Past historic re-enactments have featured the soiled doves of the Gold Rush era, St. Elmo tours, cemetery tours, and even historic river trips. Melodrama. Buena Vista’s homegrown Pick & Shovel Players produce and star in a delightful historically-flavored melodrama. Come prepared to boo, hiss and sing-along during nighttime performances in July and August in downtown Buena Vista.
Gold Rush Days. Full-contact history fills the streets of Buena Vista each August. Events include gold panning, a historic costume promenade, gunslinger showdowns, old-time music, food and refreshments. Also includes the perennially popular third leg of the Triple Crown of Burro Racing which celebrates the way miners used to race into the hills to stake their claims in the rush to strike it rich.

Juan Bautista de Anza Day, Poncha Springs Town Park and Town Hall. Join scholars and history buffs in a commemoration of Juan Bautista de Anza’s 1779 foray into the San Luis and Upper Arkansas valleys. This unsung historical figure of the American West is also known as the founder of the Presidio in San Francisco and governor of provincial New Mexico. The event is free and open to the public.
Turner Farm Apple Fest. A harvest celebration that wraps tasty, educational and fun in one neat daylong celebration of the apple. Historical tours, tractor and pony rides for the kids plus apple picking, apple juice slurping and apple pies. In Buena Vista, .25 miles west of the traffic light.
